In Memoriam: Yoan Plourde, 25

VICTORIA, BC – In what has been reported as a non-work related accident, Yoan Plourde, a video technician who was part of the Solotech crew supporting the Jann Arden tour died early on Sept. 5 after a four-story fall at the Parkside Hotel and Spa here at about 2:30 a.m. Plourde, who was described by Solotech management as a “brilliant” video technician, was an only son; he is survived by his parents.

LD Tim Oliver's overall visual design included having lights in front of and behind the screens, and the rig was also designed to be easy to rig, break down and transport between festival gigs. As with previous Massive Attack shows, back-lighting played a key role in retaining a sense of visual mystery and magic.

Photo by Ralph LarmannKASTELLAUN, Germany – The Nature One music festival, which took place here July 31-Aug. 2, drew some 72,000 visitors with a roster of 300 international DJs and EDM acts. The event gave LD Thomas Gerdon the chance to use GLP’s new large-format impression X4 XL for the first time. Gerdon already had 64 impression X4 heads incorporated into the stage design but managed to work in 12 additional X4 XL fixtures.

Fineline Provides Lighting and Video Support for Eden Sessions in Cornwall, U.K.CORNWALL, U.K. - Fineline supplied lighting, LED screen, rigging and crew to the 2014 Eden Sessions, a diverse series of music performances staged at the Eden Project, based here. The sessions ran over a 5+ week period and featured a line up including Skrillex, Dizzee Rascal, Katy B, Ellie Goulding, Elbow, The Pixies and others. For the second year, Fineline worked closely with Andy Cotton of TAO Productions, who production managed the events and coordinated all technical aspects.

Godiva Festival Main Stage Gets the Avolites Sapphire TouchUK - Lighting designer Yenz Nyholm ran the Main Stage lighting at Coventry's Godiva Festival this year from an Avolites Sapphire Touch, with a host of visiting LDs using the console as their acts performed. "The Sapphire Touch works well on a festival due to the many faders and easy to read touch screens," says Nyholm. "It's very intuitive, so any LD can use it within a few minutes of turning up. The many faders work well on a festival/busking situation, where you need to be able to grab anything very quickly."

TOKYO – Tokyo is busy – ok make that frantic- by day, but it’s when the sun goes down that this city takes on a level of intensity unique in the world. New York may be the city that never sleeps, but Tokyo never even slows down. “Time moves in its own special way” at night in the Japanese capital, as novelist Haruki Murakami wrote, aided no doubt by thousands of jam-packed clubs. Standing out in this neon sea of nightlife is a tall order for any new establishment; yet ELE Tokyo met this challenge with flying colors, not to mention split beams, intense strobes and a plethora of pixel mapped effects from Chauvet Professional used in a stunning fashion by LD Michael Meacham of iDesign Productions (Miami, FL).

Live TV Show’s Glass Stage Breaks in Vietnam; 3 Injured

HO CHI MINH CITY – A glass stage that served as part of the TV set for the Vietnamese version of a Netherlands-based reality show cracked during the live production, injuring three. The second show of the second season of Giong Hat Viet Nhi, (The Voice of the Children), was underway at the Liberation Film Studio when the stage problem caused a cameraman to fall. Fog effects were in use, and two young dancers fell as well. Although all three were injured, none of the injuries were life-threatening or serious enough to require an extended hospital stay.
